Leadership
“Leaders are not born, they are made.” - Vince Lombardi
Leadership from within a football program can have an enormous impact on how a season goes as well as the development of the program. I believe in the above quote that means leaders need to be developed. Leaders are defined by the people they lead. In any program, there will always be leaders that rise to the top. This is typically through performance on the field, in the classroom, in the weight room, or most importantly, through interactions with team mates.
In our program, we will have a leadership council that is decided on mainly by the players within our program. Players will vote for who should be on our leadership council during spring ball. This will not be grade specific. Any player 9-12 is eligible for our leadership council. If there are any players that the coaching staff consider remarkably overlooked, we will also add them to the leadership council group. This group will be responsible for encouraging teammates throughout the summer and helping build our program from within. They will also be who our team captains are selected from in the fall. Over the summer I will meet regularly with our leadership council to develop them as leaders as well as encourage and communicate with teammates regarding work outs, practices, and other events.
Captains will be selected from the leadership council during doubles week. These will be game day leaders that will be rotated through for coin tosses and in game communications. Captains will be voted on by the players and the coaching staff based on how they have interacted and grown with their teammates over the summer.
