Two Box
This group drill is designed to help get through a higher volume of run plays in a shorter period of time. Using two boxes, we use two scout teams to align in different fronts we expect to see that week. This is useful for teams that mix over/under or odd/even fronts.
Going off a script, a coach will call out the play. OL get's on the ball, makes their calls, runs the play. As soon as the play is over, they turn around and get to the other front and echo the call. Then the next play is called out and we move through the script. We have gotten through 8-10 plays (16-20 reps) in less than 10 minutes.
Developed as part of our tempo offense, two box creates multiple advantages for our team.
More guys get involved in practice. By adding a second scout team, we get more young guys involved and helping our team for Fridays.
It makes the OL have to move quick and think on their feet. It also builds conditioning into practice.
Getting the faster reps allows for the 2nd team to also work in and get their reps in the allotted time.
Our team does not always go at an up tempo no huddle pace, but if we can move quickly in practice, it allows the game to slow down. In 2019, we were able to run out much of the clock at the end of a game and score a touchdown to put the game away. You can see the clip below.
